Madison Springdale Cemetery Talking Tombstones
Brothers,
Springdale Cemetery Talking Tombstones in Madison on Oct 14 from 4-6:30 PM. There are still available parts.

Henry Breeding Farm for Reeves Festival, Saturday, August 26, 2023, 9 AM - 4 PM
Brothers,
I hope all is well with you and yours. I also hope you have had a great summer. Our next meeting is scheduled for September. I did want to make you aware of a recruiting opportunity that will occur on Saturday August 26th, 2023 from 9:00 am till 4:00 pm at the Reeves Breeding Farm in Edinburgh.
I hail from the city having grown up in Cleveland, Ohio- so I cannot answer 'what the Henry Breeding is?'. You would have to ask a local like Jeff Maudlin.

We have been trying to establish a relationship with the Bartholomew Historical Society having done their Talking Tombstone programs. When that was put together they asked if we would like to be part of the Reeves Festival- we (or at least a few of us ) agreed and asked if we could set up a recruiting/information booth for the SUVCW with interest in recruiting for our camp. They agreed and I for one will be there.

The evolution of this included firing muskets, having spectators fire muskets (ours), and live firing. Due to a number of concerns, the live firing is off. Having spectators fire our muskets is a possibility but a few of us had some concern about cost of powder, caps and that all too time consuming aspect of cleaning the musket after use (that is not a lot of fun).

I have asked my old reenacting unit, the 49th Indiana infantry if I could borrow their stash of wooden muskets. They have agreed. The plan would be in addition to the recruitment booth we could offer company drill for the kids and interested adults.
The link to the event -Fakebook Bartholomew County Historical Society (2) Facebook.

The following is a cut and paste. This is a fund raiser for the society - I am assuming (but will check) that as participants we would not be charged.
"Come out to the historic Henry Breeding Farm for Reeves Festival, Saturday, August 26, 2023, 9 am - 4 pm.

Join us for this annual event that celebrates the Reeves family and commemorates the roles that Reeves Pulley Company and Reeves & Co. played in our county! All ages will enjoy a fun day filled with Reeves steam engine rides, hands-on history stations, farm animals, blacksmithing, classic cars, garden tours, food trucks, AND the rarely seen IU Steam Calliope!
Entertainment Schedule:
10-12 Bettis Band with hammered dulcimer
12-2 Banister Family Band
2-4 Cottonpatch

Tickets are available at the Bartholomew County Historical Society Museum (524 3rd ST, Columbus, Indiana, 47201 -- 812.372.3541), Viewpoint Books, or day of at the gate.
$10 per car - BCHS members FREE!

The Historic Henry Breeding Farm is located at 13730 N 100 W, Edinburgh, Indiana, 46124

Watch for updates at bartholomewhistory.org and on our Facebook & Instagram - @bartholomewhistory"
We could use help recruiting, sitting at the table, talking about the Camp and the Civil War. Bring your CW kit and participate in drill/firings. This would be a great chance to recruit and we can have members with lineage and associate members who have interest in the Civil War.

Let me know if you are planning to come - Regrets would be good to have as well (lets me know that the message got out).

Rededication  GAR/WRC Memorial to the Unknown Soldier (Columbus City Cemetery )
Brothers,
We had another article in the local paper on Saturday - I had asked one of the editors, David Stafford, if the paper could publicize the dedication ceremony. On page B6 of The Republic 'UNKNOWN SOLDIER MEMORIAL TO BE REDEDICATED'. The article had a pre and post picture of the inscription.

From a publicity standpoint- the newspaper, the City Parks and Recreation Department (they run the cemeteries), the Historical Society, and the SUVCW Department of Indiana have been notified and announcements have been sent. Our Facebook page has this as well.
I will contact the police department about the musket firing and contact the 'Next Door' online site to announce the event and the noise.

Here is a draft of the schedule and needs for the program (it takes for the 1895 event)
Flag Day Ceremony

From the description of the event in 1895

1.     The memorial was covered with a silken flag.
2.     There was a brief address (done by the officer of the day for the local GAR- Major Strickland)
3.     After the address – the memorial was unveiled and presented to the local GAR/WRC
4.     The local commander (Glick) acting as the recipient of the memorial acknowledged the gift.
5.     Chaplin gave the divine blessing
6.     Commander Glick gave an address – similar to what he said at Garland-Brooks earlier in the event.
7.     WRC poem read by Mrs. Dr. Hawley – REST was the title of the poem and was in the 1895 paper.
8.     Chaplin invokes the devine blessing
9.     Little girls spread evergreens and flowers over the lot.
10.  Band music to end the event.

We need-
1.     A master of ceremonies – Serving the role of Major Strickland-
2.     A representative of Commander Glick – this person gives the long speech.
3.     Chaplin for the devine blessings
4.     Someone to represent Ms. Hawley to read the REST poem
5.     Little girls with flowers and evergreen
6.     Music

Our Program
1. I would like to take the role of the master of ceremonies - welcome the group. Give a short intro speech on the project.
2. Introduce Phil McClure,  – he gives a short speech on his tending to the memorial over the years. He  unveils the memorial.
3. Jeff Maudlin as Glick, accepts the gift of the memorial (symbolic). It was Glick's camp and Glicks money that paid for the memorial
4. Our Chaplin gives the blessing #1
5. Glick gives his longish speech. (copy of the text was in the 1895 paper)
6. I will introduce the representative of the WRC. The WRC poem is read – my wife, Linda in period costume could do this?
7. Our Chaplin gives  blessing #2
8. The spreading of flowers and evergreens. Not sure we have a budget for young ladies to do this, but camp members can.
9. The musket firing- we need a volunteer to lead the firing
10. Boom box music- I just finished watching Gettysburg - but this could be deleted. They had a band there back in 1895
11. A final thank you ending the ceremony.

Recap what we need to make this work
1. People - an audience. PLEASE ATTEND
2. People fulfilling rolls and giving speeches
     A. Chaplin - who gives 2 blessings - could be what we do at our meetings or something impromptu.
     B. A leader for the The musket Firing Salute - suggest a dry run on safety - weapon inspection and what the orders will be for the firing
3. A large silk flag to cover the memorial- probably wrapped around the areas where the plaques are vs. a top to bottom covering.
4. Camp flags
5. Other suggestions that could be done on short notice.

Looking forward to hearing who can be there and what role they can fulfill.
Warmest regards,
Brother Fred

Brothers,

Wednesday June 14, 2023,  at 7:00 pm our Camp will rededicate the GAR/WRC Memorial to the Unknown Soldier.

We have a program almost finalized. We have the honor of having Captain Michael Beck of the SVR attending. Captain Beck will lead the salute - musket firing.

Those of you participating in the Ceremony - speaker or part of the honor guard, should plan to arrive early- perhaps at 6:00 pm.

There will be a musket inspection for safety and Captain Beck will go over his commands for the firing of the muskets.

The Cemetery  has no formal address- it is between Sycamore St on the west and Chestnut St on the east with 19th st to the north and 16th st to the south. Columbus City Cemetery in Columbus, Indiana - Find a Grave Cemetery

Brothers,

Our January 12, 2021 meeting will again be by Zoom. Hopefully in the near future we will be face-to-face. I will conduct the swearing in of officers this time.

Brothers,

Mill Race Center will be closed on the date of our next scheduled meeting in April.  The powers above recommend cancelling meetings for at least a month because of members ages.

Brothers,

I stand corrected about the Curt Fields presentation. Rather than an April presentation by Curt Fields, it will be March 26. I am sure it will be an excellent speech.

Columbus Republlic:
Coming in March is Dr. Curt Fields, living historian and re-enactor, bringing Ulysses S. Grant to life with the Man Behind the Uniform. Dr. Fields will be at the Jennings County Historical Museum on March 26 at 6 P.M.

This may be moved to the Vernon Baptist Church.

Brothers,

I have also attached a draft agenda for the Department of Indiana 2020 Midwinter Encampment.  Please review the agenda and if you have any additions/corrections, please let me know within a few days, if  possible.  If you are a Camp Commander or a Department Officer, you are asked to supply a report to the Department at the the Midwinter, if attending, AND via email attachment to the Department Secretary, William Adams (email: adamswr949@gmail.com). Once again, I encourage all camps in the department to bring their camp flags to display at this year's Midwinter Encampment, similar to what is done at the National Encampments with the department flags.
